Virginia DOT’s Demolition Porn Vid

What’s funny about this compilation of bridges getting blowed up to opera music is that is it seems to be an official government production. Having a bureaucratic logo attached to this kind of gleeful id — how often does that happen? And is it us, or does it seem kind of like it’s trying to hook into the same vibe as this classic scene in a Clockwork Orange?

From an entertainment perspective, it suffers from being too repetitive. (There ought to be more build up to the demolitions and less recycling of clips.) But it’s still an amusing document.

  1. I’m pretty sure that first video is an IED going off under an overpass in Iraq, not precisely a demolition per se. That tan pole with the rope hanging from it looks just like the whip antenna of a Humvee, which would be at the right height if the guy were filming from the turret.

Thanks, Bi-coloured. I defer to you expertise. I stupidly followed the YouTube tag on that one.

Darker in that context and a bit out of place with the others now, but still interesting — those visible shock waves… wow.

Loved that piece from VDOT. The best are the ripple effects in the nightshot on the demolition of the old Woodrow Wilson Bridge. In the footage there is no label, but the new bridge is pretty clear.

Ha, I used to drive over that old Jamestown Bridge. The old approaches are still there.
