The Decade's Ten Most Expensive Transit Projects
9. New Jersey River Line
Though commuter trains have been running between Trenton and Philadelphia on the west side of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania for decades. But the towns on the east side, in New Jersey, were deprived of train service until 2004, when the River Line opened for service along the 34 miles between Trenton and Camden.
Unlike most other light rail systems, the River Line was designed to use diesel-powered vehicles to reduce the cost of construction, since the need for electrical equipment was eliminated.
