The Decade's Ten Most Expensive Transit Projects
6. San Francisco BART to SFO Airport Extension
Few projects have ignited so much controversy as BART’s heavy rail extension between San Francisco and Millbrae, with a new stop at San Francisco International Airport. The 8.7-mile line had been in the planning for 50 years before it finally opened in 2003.
The line, despite its cost, is poorly designed. With a wye moving trains to and from the airport, service between San Francisco and points south of the airport is questionable, as are connections between the Airport and Millbrae, where Caltrain commuter trains arrive. As a result, far fewer people than expected are riding the line.
