The Decade's Ten Most Expensive Transit Projects

3. New Jersey Hudson-Bergen Light Rail

Running north-south across the Hudson River from Manhattan, the Hudson-Bergen light rail system speeds the commutes of Northern New Jersey’s inhabitants. Three interconnected services run between the cities of Weekawken, Hoboken, Jersey City, and Bayonne, with easy connections to PATH and New Jersey Transit trains speeding into New York.

The line has been expanded several times since its first segment opened in 2000, with total expenditures now reaching more than $2 billion. A final station will be constructed at West 8th Street in Bayonne in the coming years, but further extensions are unlikely in the near future.
