- Language in the latest war funding bill allows transit agencies to use 10 percent of stimulus money to pay for operating expenses like salaries and fuel. This takes some pressure off strapped cities like St. Louis and will stem layoffs. (NY Times)
- Kansas City will spend $200 million in stimulus money to revamp and green a 150 square block area with mostly poor, black residents. It would weatherize buildings, establish a “green sewer” by planting trees, and possibly create bus rapid transit. (PolicyLink)
- In the DC suburb of Tyson’s Corner half the land in town is roads or parking lots. The city is midway through a radical reinvention that would triple it’s density. Time offers three renditions of how this might look. (Time)

Those pics of Tyson’s Corner don’t seem like they are actually of Tyson’s Corner. Maybe the third one but I don’t think there is a green mountain or hill alongside it. Maybe 30 miles out on the other side of Dulles Airport but not there. Maybe it is just all the white lines overlaid.

“A resort that caters to celebs like Kate Winslet is constructing a new facility within meters of the reserve of the Jarawa tribe, which has had very limited contact with outsiders.”
It’s interesting to see how a vague and attention-grabbing press release is made vaguer and more sensationalist: “once visited by Kate Winslet” is now “caters to celebs” and “about 500m” becomes “whithin meters”.

its even funnier that you dont know anything about what “civilization” brought to that area over the last 60+ years. from the japanese bombing hunter-gatherers during WWII (Kelly 2000) to roads for logging, etc. to bring disease, death, prostitution and alcoholism after land conscription and encroachment.
hopefully more people get stuck with arrows like those fishermen did a year or so back. its well deserved.
