Law enforcement agencies are starting to take notice of the rash of websites popping up promising to get you free government money.

To explore the seamy side of the current national obsession with all things stimulus, we decided click through some of the paid links on Google searches like “give me my Obama money” and “i need a stimulus grant.”

Among other appalling discoveries, was this site which promises to advance you some vague form of federal grant so you can get a jump on your Christmas shopping:

Then there’s Jessica.

She got $12,000 from the “Obama approved new stimulus plan” and used that as start-up cash for some scheme to bilk money from Google:

And that whole “redistribution” meme that Joe the Plumber started in the general election is also being used as a hook:

But the scammers also have standards–they want a respectable and upstanding customer base:

Which is to say, not the sort of people who want free grant money. Except you, of course.

Facebook was overrun with ads for these sites not too long ago. I must have thumbs-downed about 80 of them. They wouldn’t go away.
