GOOD magazine has created an elegant schematic showing how drugs get into our drinking water. The list of pharma-contaminants includes carbamazepine, an epilepsy treatment that lowers alcohol tolerance, and estrone, a hormone in birth control pills that causes gender mutation in fish. The chemicals are present in trace amounts, but collectively the quantities can be large. According to GOOD there are enough antibiotics in India’s drinking water at any one time to treat 90,000 people. Click here to see to see the full page.
